On May 1st, we were guests in the courtyard of Nachbarschaftswerk Wagnis, where we built the first prototypes of a folding stool. The goal? It needs to be foldable, simply constructed, and customizable, so that not everyone just copies our brilliant design, but can create their own unique stool!

What we’ve ended up with is a stool that can be folded up like an accordion, topped with a flat surface. This makes it super easy to store, like in the PONG kiosk!

This construction method can lead to some pretty quirky designs, turning the stool into an anti-design classic! Here, the building principle is set, but the design, dimensions, and wood preferences are completely up to the stool makers. We think that’s fantastic, as it results in truly unique stools!

The functionality of the stool is a bit hit or miss; balancing on it is definitely encouraged and essential!

You can build it using all sorts of leftover materials and paint it however you like. To cut the seat for the stool, we’ll start by assembling the legs with the hinges. Then, we’ll stand the legs up on a board and trace the shape onto the board with a pencil.

Then the board gets cut to size, and ideally, you end up with a perfectly fitting seat for your stool… It’s a bit tricky to explain, but you might be able to see it in the photos.

It’s definitely a bonus when all the legs are about the same length! We trimmed them down to size in the end…

Parts:

  • Hinges (Vormann DIN table hinge, wide 80 x 28 mm, galvanized) – they might be a bit on the small side, but they’ll do the trick!
  • Wood scraps (boards, battens, etc.)
  • Color
